About Suffolk Skillz

Suffolk Skillz is an event run by local employers including BT, Port of Felixstowe, Milsom Hotels, Suffolk Constabulary, Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust, Suffolk County Council, Customer Service Direct and Suffolk Coastal District Council. The event is held twice a year, in March and October, and is now in its second year.

Each day comprises of a series of activities which are designed to develop the groups of skills set out in the framework of personal, learning and thinking skills, and therefore helps to enable young people to enter work and adult life as confident and capable individuals. These skills include:

  • - Independent enquiry
  • - Creative thought
  • - Reflective learning
  • - Team working
  • - Self management
  • - Effective participation

We endeavour to make the days busy, upbeat and hopefully enjoyable with a fair degree of fun involved and with the opportunity for young people to meet with local employers.

The day begins with a team working activity involving all young people, initially getting small teams to do some collaborative working. This is followed by ALL of the teams coming together to work towards a better/stronger result than that of the smaller teams; hopefully this will get you thinking...!! The day then progresses with presentations and a series of workshops provided by local industry. Details of the individual workshops include: activities that allow a Port to function, a hotel to operate, and a local authority to govern, as well as the possibility of looking at some new technology.
